This event takes place on 3rd March 2018 from 10:30am to 4:00pm and will take place at St George’s Church, Crown Street, Methwold, IP26 4PQ. It is a Affiliated Group event being organised by Alveva Quilters, Liz Nally ().
MEG BROWNE (SMALL)’S QUILTS
Meg Brown (Small) was a well-known quilter in Norfolk, a slightly eccentric figure (she wouldn’t mind me saying that!) and usually seen wearing one of her trademark appliquéd waistcoats. She moved to Norfolk in 1980 and was a founder member of Norfolk Quilters. Meg made many quilts of her own and also bought several from other quilters including two of Pauline Burbidge’s early works, these together with the 1920’s American quilts which she had started collecting formed the basis of several quilt shows which she held in her local area and which introduced her to many other quilters. In 1986 Meg opened her quilt shop and gallery ‘The Blue Goose’ in Elm Hill, Norwich, this was an Aladdin’s cave for quilters with fabric, books, equipment and everything else you could wish for. The topmost of the three floors was where Meg displayed her collection of American quilts and as many of these were for sale regular trips to America were needed to replenish stock and Meg and her husband Bill travelled extensively going as far south as Texas and as far west as Kentucky.
After moving to the Feltwell area, Meg joined Alveva Quilters and was a very active member always taking part in the shows and other activities. We were extremely sad to hear that she had passed away, suddenly, in October 2016 and agreed with her family that we would have an exhibition of her quilt collection – details of which are below.
