Beauty of Boutis 2014

Never has such a small item (less than 5 cm square) taken so many stitches and so much time! Eyes were crossed and fingers were sore but everyone was engrossed, happy, full of cake and had something to show for a really great Liz Nally hand sewing works

Once again an Area Day came to Swaffham in a modern hall with good parking, light and airy room with good facilities - such a good venue!  Our tutor was Liz Nally, who brought along some beautiful quilted items from her Antique Collection for us to examine including a boutis ‘dressing gown’ which we had to try on!

After a welcome cuppa and a choice of gorgeous cakes, a visit to the pre-owned stall, the Guild Shop table and a general catch up we settled down to learn how to stitch 'Boutis' style.

Liz gave us an introduction and demonstration then we started opening our kit of pattern/ fabric and chenille needle.  We drew the pattern onto the small piece of fabric and started stitching with the guidance of Liz.  Once this was done, the threading of the channels and motif began and almost like magic the transformation began. Soon the finished item was in sight – delightful scissor angels.

But I had other ideas! The size was just right for my doll’s house nursery as a cot quilt.....so I am very happy.  Brenda Crevald.
